This year join us on our 2nd expedition as we paddle along the Quinnehtukqut (CT) River with truly local pollinator plants from the Ecotype Project- the native seed initiative of CT NOFA. Our expedition puts these seeds back in the soil -the living seed bank- of this riparian corridor. Once the plants are there, nature will use its myriad dispersal mechanisms to regenerate the ancient banks of the mighty river!
These gorgeous plants provide habitat & food for our pollinators all along the river and ensure local food security for us as we rewild our landscapes.
In 2021 we will paddle from the top of Connecticut to the Long Island Sound- spreading the seeds of ecological resilience in traditional outrigger canoes.

To fortify the biodiversity and resilience of our ecoregion, we need plants that can persist as the climate changes around them. The Ecotype Project’s goal is to enable responsible habitat restoration by increasing the availability of ecotypic (truly local and appropriate) plant material in the Northeast. Our work is to amplify both the supply and demand of ecotypic native plants for region wide habitat restoration. To do this, we must disrupt a billion dollar nursery and habitat restoration industry. Our initiative exists at the intersection of work done by farmers, botanists, municipal land managers, conservationists, and policy makers. These stakeholders each play a role in a place-based supply chain. The Ecotype Project “ground-truths” climate change mitigation and adaptation through the rewilding of our landscape.

The CT NOFA mission is to ensure the growth and viability of organic agriculture, organic food, and organic land care in Connecticut. We envision a healthy, organic Connecticut founded on ecologically, socially and economically just principles. CT NOFA also runs the NOFA Organic Land Care program to train the next generation of organic landscapers, land managers, and conservationists.
As a farming organization our livelihoods are predicated on what we can yield from the land. 2021-2030 is the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration. Land stewardship is a reciprocal relationship and it is time we all do our part to safeguard our wild corridors.
